A Schuylkill County man is facing several charges after police say he set a home on fire and assaulted a woman.
It happened just before 9 p.m. Wednesday in the 1000 block of East Pine Street in Mahanoy City.
Officials said Joe Yeich threw bleach all over a woman, beat her on the head, and deliberately set the home on fire.
Witnesses told police Yeich told them that the victim tried to kill him, so he beat her up and set the house on fire because "the devil made him do it."
Police found him around the corner in a home on Market Street.
The victim was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown for treatment of her injuries.
Around 20 to 30 neighbors were evacuated because of the threat of the fire spreading to their homes.
Yeich is facing charges of aggravated assault, causing or risking a catastrophe, criminal mischief, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and arson.
He was taken to the Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $50,000 straight cash bail.
There was no word on the victim's condition.
