Investigators: Pottsville fire was an accident

POTTSVILLE, Pa. -

A fire that claimed the lives of six members of one family in Pottsville was accidental, according to investigators.

The fire on May 12 started in the second floor kitchen area of the house in the 200 block of Pierce Street and spread up the stairs to the third floor where all six victims were found, according to Chief Todd March, Pottsville Fire Dept.

The victims were identified as Eric Brown, 30, and his children, Elijah Brown, 2; Emily Brown, 3; Jeremiah Brown, 7; and Joy Brown, 8.

Another adult, Kristina Thomas, 26, also died in the fire. She's the sister of the children's mother, Kelly Brown, who survived.

March said the investigation concluded the fire was accidental, and both physical evidence and lab results showed no indication that any intentional acts contributed to the tragedy.

The Schuylkill County coroner, David Moylan, said all six victims died of carbon monoxide poisoning due to smoke inhalation.
