Twenty-year-old Codi Smith of East Stroudsburg has been charged with ethnic intimidation after launching a verbal barrage of obscenities at workers in the Monroe County domestic relations office Wednesday.
Smith went into a rage when told she would have to do a paternity test to determine the father of her baby, reported Monroe County Detective Joseph Coddington, who filed the charges.
When Smith launched a verbal barrage of obscenities in a caseworker’s office, the caseworker asked her to leave.
On the way out of the office, Smith said: “This is America and I can say whatever I want to say.”
Using foul and descriptive language, the suspect disrupted several offices in the Monroe County Courthouse. Many visitors rush toward security at the front door to get help for the caseworker.
A courthouse security officer who heard Smith yelling approached Smith and asked her to watch her language and calm down. Smith refused.
She began to yell at him and said again: “This is America and I can say and do what I want."
Smith repeatedly called the security officer the N-word and another derogatory word as she was being escorted out of the courthouse. Just before she left she told him: “You could get a job picking cotton”.
When Coddington called Smith on Thursday, she admitted what happened. While the detective was talking to her she made several more racial comments on the phone toward the security officer. When Coddington advised her that he was filing criminal charges against her, Smith began yelling at the detective on the phone.
Smith is being charged with ethnic intimidation and two counts of disorderly conduct, one for loud noises and one for obscene language.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for August 5 before Magisterial District Judge Kristina Anzini.
