Weatherwood resident charged in death of fellow resident

WEATHERLY, Pa. -

Charges have been filed in the death of a nursing home resident in Carbon County.

Carl Louis Smith is to blame for the death of Margaret Lechleiter, officials said.

The two residents of Weatherwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Weatherly were arguing around 7:15 p.m. on April 20, according to court papers, and Smith, 53, pushed her with both hands.

Lechleiter, 85, fell straight back "like a board" and hit her head on the floor, police said.

Lechleiter was taken to Hazleton General Hospital, where a cat scan (CT) showed a massive hemorrhage. She was pronounced dead at 1:37 a.m. on April 21.

An autopsy showed Lechleiter died of a subdural hematoma due to falling and hitting her head after being pushed. The manner of death was homicide, according to the coroner.

Smith is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, attempted simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

According to a statement released by Weatherwood, "both residents suffer from dementia."
