The Thornhurst Bridge over the Lehigh River is now open, the State Department of Transportation announced Friday.
The Locus Ridge Road bridge is located in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County, and Thornhurst Township, Lackawanna County.
A project started in Dec. 2011 to replace the old structurally deficient steel I-beam bridge with a concrete bulb T-beam bridge.
During construction, Locust Ridge Road was closed and detoured between River Court Road in Monroe County and River Road in Lackawanna County.
Clearwater Construction, Inc. of Mercer, Pa. was the general contractor on the $4.1 million project.
The old Thornhurst Bridge was constructed in 1946 and was posted with a three-ton weight restriction. The bridge was 105 feet long and 26 feet wide. The new bridge is 103 long and 44 feet wide and has no weight restriction. Locust Ridge Road has an average daily traffic volume of 3,146 vehicles.
