Man arrested for double murder in Monroe County

Police in Monroe County are crediting good police work and some lucky breaks for helping them crack a double homicide case in the Poconos.

Luiz Vasquez, 28, is behind bars charged with gunning down two men last month in Coolbaugh Township park.

All three men worked together at United Envelope Company in Mount Pocono.

Investigators say they caught a break after a person found a backpack with the murder weapon.

Investigators say they had to make an arrest in this case just to ease the fears of the public.

"When you have killings as violent as this we wanted to put the community at ease that it wasn't a random act of violence but still it was at a municipal park," said Chief Harry Lewis, from the Pocono Mountain Regional police.

Police say on August 16th, Vasquez met up with Bertoldo Velez, 55, and Joseph King, Jr., 37, at the Coolbaugh Township Municipal Park.

Court documents show the meeting was taking place because Vasquez owed Velez $20,000 and that King was Velez's bodyguard.

"There's no evidence to link the two to a drug violation, but it appears that Mr. Velez loaned money out for repayment for a living," added Lewis.

Investigators say the meeting took place after a shift at United Envelope Company on the 16th.

The following day a patrol officer found a car at the park.

Documents show King had been shot in the chest area.

Velez was also shot in the chest area and beaten with a rock.

Investigators spent a month searching for the killer, and then a witness found a backpack in a drainage ditch just 100 yards from Luiz Vasquez's home.

"We recovered the weapon that was used that was linked to the crime by ballistic testing and other evidence was found which linked Mr. Vasquez to the victims and the crime scene," said Lewis.

Police arrested Luiz Vasquez at work Thursday morning.

"It was a double homicide where we had no suspects and it was a who done it in the first couple of hours," said Lewis.  "We're just very grateful we got some lucky breaks and these detectives worked as hard as they did."

Luiz Vasquez currently is in the Monroe county correctional facility

His bail was denied at his arraignment.
