Schuylkill Co. woman falls asleep, ejected through car's sunroof

A 23-year-old Pine Grove woman was ejected through the sunroof of her car when she fell asleep at the wheel and her car hit a tree, police said.

It happened around 1 a.m. Monday.

State Police at Schuylkill Haven said Crystal Cortez was traveling north on Luckenbill Road, and when she got to the intersection with S. Front Street in Wayne Twp., Schuylkill Co., she fell asleep.

Her car traveled off the road and onto the west berm of S. Front Street she she hit a tree, then hit more trees before being wedged between two trees.

Police said at final rest, the car was airborne and the 2 driver's side tires were off the ground, and the car burst into flames.

During the accident, Cortez was ejected through the sunroof and was found lying near the car before two individuals pulled her to safety.

She was flown to Lehigh Valley-Cedar Crest by MedEvac. There's no word on her condition.

Police said DUI charges will be filed against Cortez, pending a blood test to determine bloock alcohol levels.
