GIRARDVILLE, Pa. -

A Schuylkill County former funeral director defrauded a Lehigh County couple over prepaid funeral expenses, police said.

State police at Frackville said William F. McDonald, 43, of 403 W. Main Street, Girardville, was the former owner/operator of McDonald Funeral Home.

Lenore Breinich of Macungie, Lehigh County, had contacted McDonald years ago to make funeral arrangements, and prepaid for burial expenses.

When she died on October 26, 2012, the executor for her estate, Gerald Breinich, 78, of Macungie, contacted McDonald to make funeral arrangements.

He was not able to make contact with McDonald, and police found out that McDonald had accepted a check from Lenore Breinich for $8150 for funeral expenses, but McDonald never set up an account for her.

McDonald cashed the check and used the money for other purposes, police said.

McDonald admitted to police that he did it.

He was arraigned Wednesday on charges of theft and theft by deception.

Bail was set at $10,000.

A preliminary hearing is set for March 13.
