A Lehighton man is in custody, accused of assaulting his wife while she was driving and breaking her jaw.
Mahoning Twp. Police said they were called to Upper Nis Hollow Drive just before 7 p.m. on Tuesday for a report of a woman being assaulted by a man inside a car. Before officers arrived, the man had driven off.
According to police, the woman, Clara Schaffer, told them her husband, Matthew Schaffer, 35, was the one who assaulted her and broke her jaw.
While she was driving on Mahoning Mountain Road, her husband punched her in the face and put his arm in front of her eyes, causing her to lose control of the vehicle and nearly drive of the side of the mountain, police said.
At one point he told her to drive to East Penn so he could kill her, police said.
She then made a left turn onto Upper Nis Hollow Drive, where he punched her a few more times before she was able to stop the vehicle, police said. She tried to get out of the car but he wrapped his arm around her neck and held her there for about a minute, police said.
She was able to flee and get out of the vehicle. Matthew then got into the driver's seat and drove away.
He crashed the car into a tree, then drove to his residence where police took him into custody for suspicion of DUI, pending blood test results.
Matthew Schaffer is facing charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment.
He was taken to Carbon County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail.
A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 26 at 2 p.m.
