Centralia residents allowed to stay

The few people remaining in the town ravaged by an underground mine fire can stay in their homes.

It's a victory for the people who sued to keep their homes in Centralia, Columbia County.

A settlement of a federal lawsuit will let the residents stay for as long as they live.

It also includes a cash pay out of roughly $350,000.

State officials have been trying to evict the residents for years.

A mine fire ignited in 1962 and spread underground, threatening homes and businesses with poisonous gases and dangerous sinkholes.
