Couple acquitted in Monroe Co. sex assault case

STROUDSBURG, Pa. -

A Monroe County couple is free after a jury said they didn't sexually assault a teen in their care last year.

Cassandra Smith and Christopher Hickler of Coolbaugh Twp. were on trial facing charges of aggravated indecent assault and related offenses.

A 13-year-old girl who lived with them during the summer of 2011 told police that Smith and Hickler had sex with her at least once, and that they also gave her alcohol, marijuana and cocaine.

The trial began Thursday and the jury acquitted the couple around 5 p.m. Friday, according to defense attorney David Skutnik, who represented Smith.

Skutnik said he's very happy with with jury's verdict and appreciated the help of Hickler's attorney, Brett Riegel.
