PennDOT restocks road salt supplies

With a potential major winter storm on the way, PennDOT has trucks making the journey from Delaware and back again for a commodity in high demand this winter: road salt.
"It was just a prudent move to get those reserves here in case this storm dumps more than anticipated," explained PennDOT spokesperson Ron Young.
Contracted haulers are bringing 20,000 tons of salt to PennDOT stockpiles in Allentown, Harrisburg and Philadelphia.
Our region will get 8,000 tons that will be split between Lehigh, Northampton and Monroe counties.
"I understand they have probably in the neighborhood of 15 to 20 trucks going round trip constantly from about 3 or 4 in the afternoon to about 3 or 4 in the morning," Young shared.
Governor Tom Corbett made the decision to dispatch the trucks earlier this week and the effort should be finished by Tuesday. Local officials say this winter could be a record-breaking year for salt usage.
"This year we're a little over 110,000 tons used in our district so far," said Young. "Last year we used a total for the whole winter of 90,440 tons, so we're well over that and we're not through this yet."
The salt supply at many local municipalities has been running low.
PennDOT officials say they would rather be safe than sorry.
"We had on hand about 10,000 tons or so, which would get us through a storm or two," Young described.
Young says crews use about 5,000 tons of salt each storm across the six-county region.
He feels confident that with this delivery and another salt order that's placed, PennDOT workers should be set for the rest of this winter.
