SOUTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. -

The future of the Parkland Community Library may soon be in the hands of the public it serves.

At a monthly board meeting on June 27, the Parkland Community Library Board of Directors voted to support a new referendum scheduled for November 5, 2013 that leaves the future direction of the library in the hands of the public.

"The new referendum will become an independent effort, separate from the library operation, after the ballot question has been submitted," noted Debbie Jack, PCL Executive Director, in a press release.

On June 19, 2013, Parkland Community Library lost its fight against the Parkland School District Board of Directors who wanted to slash a special library tax approved in 1998 that funds the library independently of the school district.

The library lost its request for injuctive relief in the Court of Common Pleas of Lehigh County.

Judge Michele A. Varricchi ruled that the library falls under Act 1 Taxpayer Relief Legislation and is governed with the same level funding as what school districts in the county reassessment area must abide.

The board will vote on the financial plan for the new library building at the next board meetings allowing for consideration of the new referendum.
