Two men accused of stabbing a Berks County man to death in the Bahamas are now out of jail.
Tyler Valles and Robert Schwarz each posted $35,000 bail Thursday, allowing the men to leave the Bahamas and return to the United States, according to a secretary for the men's attorney.
The two men -- Valles, 19, of Key Largo, Fla., and Schwarz, 62, of Gaylordsville, Conn. -- were charged earlier this week with manslaughter in the stabbing death of Carl Yerger, 45, of Ruscombmanor Township.
The suspects' attorney, Wayne Munroe, told 69 News that Yerger twice trespassed onto his clients' boat, which was docked at the Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina, about 50 miles east of Miami on the Bahamian island of Bimini.
Valles, who picked up a filet knife that was sitting on the dock, was going to get security when a struggle ensued.
"The deceased turned and attacked him [Valles]. He put up his hand to defend himself. He, at that point, would have had the filet knife in his hand. He is unaware if and when the deceased may have been stabbed with the knife," said Munroe, who noted that Scwarz intervened in the brief struggle.
Yerger, who was also staying at the resort, walked off and was later found dead by the resort staff, said Munroe, adding that the entire incident was captured by surveillance cameras.
Police and prosecutors in the Bahamas have not yet commented on the suspects' claims. Both men are due back in court on May 19.
Yerger served as the president of the Oley Valley Youth League.
Services will be held on Wed., March 26, at Frieden's United Church of Christ in Oley Township.
