Ronald Gainer installed as Harrisburg Diocese bishop

Amid the pomp and ceremony of his installation as Harrisburg's 11th Roman Catholic bishop, the Rev. Ronald Gainer showed his sense of humor.

In his homily Wednesday, Gainer reflected on his 29 years as a priest in the Allentown Diocese and 11 as the bishop in Lexington, Ky.

He drew applause when he said the song in his heart may be "The Pennsylvania Polka," but there's still an echo of "My Old Kentucky Home."

Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput presided over the ceremony at Harrisburg's St. Patrick Cathedral, which was attended by a large number of bishops and priests as well as Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the papal representative to the United States.

Gainer, 66, was born in Pottsville and ordained as a priest in the Allentown Diocese in 1973. During his 30 years in the diocese, Gainer served as assistant pastor at Saint Catharine of Siena Church in Mount Penn, Berks Co., and as campus minister at Albright College in Reading, Lafayette College in Easton and Kutztown University.

Gainer succeeds Bishop Joseph McFadden, who died in May.
