Police searching for Matthew Royer, a missing University of Rhode Island student from Montgomery County, are following a new lead in the case.
Royer's car -- a 2008 silver Chevrolet Cobalt with Pennsylvania plate "GZR-9059" -- was last reported to be seen at 1 p.m. on Friday at Routes 422 and 501 in Myerstown, Lebanon Co., just a few miles west of the Berks County border, state police reported Monday. It's not clear whether Royer was in the car.
Royer, himself, was last seen about 11 hours earlier at a Sunoco gas station and convenience store at Route 100 and Interstate 78 in Fogelsville, Lehigh Co., near Allentown, police said.
Surveillance cameras captured video of him there at 2:07 a.m., wearing a beige ball cap with the word "Biltmore" on it, a dark green golf shirt, khaki pants, and sandals.
"They have video of him stopping for gas, purchasing a bottle of water," Janet Royer, Matthew's mom, told 69 News on Sunday. "He wanted to use the bathroom, but there was a line, so he got in his car, opened his water, took a drink, and then left."
A cell phone tower also pinged Royer's phone at I-78 and Route 145, according to his mother.
Royer's family spoke out again Monday during a news conference at the state police station in Schwenkville, asking for Matthew Royer to call them, no questions asked.
Hours before he disappeared Friday, Royer sent his mom a text message saying he was driving home from school. He left his apartment at approximately 6:30 p.m. Thursday, state police said.
Family, friends and state police have been distributing missing person fliers and asking businesses if they have any surveillance video. Royer's mother urged the public to be on the lookout, too.
"If there's a vehicle sitting on your block that you know shouldn't be there or it's in a parking lot or something," she said.
If you have any information about the case, call the Pennsylvania State Police in Skippack at 610-584-1250.
