Pennsylvania emergency director outlines plans for winter storm

The head of the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency says hundreds of National Guardsmen are being called out and the state's emergency operations center is being activated in advance of a major winter storm.

PEMA director Glenn Cannon told a state legislative committee on Wednesday that he's concerned about the effect on the electrical grid from what's expected to be a heavy, wet snow and winds of up to 40 mph.

Cannon says 450 guardsmen will be in place at armories by Wednesday night.

He says the snow is expected to begin in southern Pennsylvania around midnight, calling it a fast-moving system that shouldn't last much more than a day.

The heaviest snows are expected from Harrisburg eastward into the Philadelphia suburbs, and throughout the Pocono Mountains in the northeast.
