HARRISBURG, Pa. -

An emerging Senate Republican plan to allow the private sale of wine and liquor in Pennsylvania could be debated within hours.

Republican senators were scheduled to meet on it privately Thursday. Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi has spent days trying to develop a plan that can win the 26 Senate votes necessary to pass a wine and liquor bill, which is a top priority of Gov. Tom Corbett.

Senators said the plan is similar to an existing Senate proposal to maintain state control of the profitable wholesale operation and allow Pennsylvania's 1,100 beer distributors the opportunity to also sell wine and liquor.

But it would scale back the number of potential new liquor outlets and push state stores to shut down if private sales in the area reach certain benchmarks.
