A homeless man who stole a can of beer from a luncheonette was caught by police before he could drink the evidence, officials said.

Namon M. Barnes ran out of Dimitrios Lunch, 401 Broadway, Bethlehem, at 2:05 p.m. Monday when an employee questioned him about the $2 can of Natty Daddy he had hidden in his pocket, after Barnes had paid for another can of the same brand of beer, officials said.

Police located Barnes about a block away, at the rear of Ahart's Market, 410 Montclair Ave., with a sealed 24-ounce can of Natty Daddy and holding a McDonald's cup full of beer, officials said.

Police found a still-cold empty Natty Daddy beer can in a dumpster near the spot where Barnes was standing, officials noted.

Barnes, 51, was arraigned on a felony retail theft charge because he has been convicted of shoplifting at least twice before, and he was committed to the Northampton County Prison on $5,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Sept. 30.
