POTTSTOWN, Pa. -

A donation is putting newborn babies on the path to becoming successful readers as they grow older.

Pottstown High School's Key Club, the local Elks Lodge and the borough library have presented 200 donated book packets to the maternity department at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center as part of the organizations' "Books 4 Babies" book drive.

The goal, organizers said, is to emphasize the importance of reading aloud to children for literacy development and language acquisition.

"We had a lot of fun working with the Pottstown Regional Public Library, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Pottstown Lodge #814 and Pottstown Memorial Medical Center," said Jenna Endy, the Key Club's president. "We look forward to continuing this project."

Donations of new and gently used books for infants and toddlers can be dropped off at Pottstown High School, 750 N. Washington St., Room 134. The donated books will be distributed to newborns at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center.

“Pottstown Memorial Medical Center is excited about the opportunity to give newborn babies the gift of literacy and to continue to serve as an integral part of the Pottstown community,” said Charlotte Dardanello, the hospital's chief nursing officer.
