One Tank Trip: The Inside Scoop

On one of the hottest days of the summer, a scoop of ice cream seems like a smart idea.

COOPERSBURG, Pa. -

One scoop, two scoops, how about 14? You can have that many in one bowl at The Inside Scoop in Coopersburg, Lehigh County.

It's a nice change of pace for owner Penny Caciolo, who came from corporate finance and, along with her husband, turned the one-time lawn mower repair shop into The Inside Scoop.

"There was a lawnmower on the top, so we rolled over and we were peeking in the windows," Caciolo said.

That's when she had an idea for a 50s-style ice cream soda shop with black and white tile floors, counter service and plenty of made-on-site ice cream.

A tour takes you back in the kitchen, where you'll learn the mix comes from Pennsylvania cows. They get pretty creative with their flavors, too.

"Really odd flavors like maple bacon. Sometimes you'll walk in here and Tabasco might be in there, which has its followers." says Caciolo.

There's the usual, along with a rotating list of 108 flavors. It all goes in the flash freezer at 20 below for 24 hours.

While you wait for your scoop, you can pass the time with a round of shuffleboard with ice cream shaped pucks.

 It'll help you work up an appetite for "The Volcano" -- 14 scoops of ice cream, eight toppings, whipped cream and cherries.

"So, it's overwhelming at times, Caciolo said. "I've had two or three people do one by themselves. One guy has done it twice."

You'll find photos of them and their empty dishes on the "Wall of Flame."

The Inside Scoop opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays and at 9:30 a.m. on weekends. Closing times vary by season.
