LOWER ALSACE TWP., Pa. -

A woman was injured while trying to rescue a dog that perished in a fire in Lower Alsace Township, Berks County, officials said.

The fire broke out early Sunday morning in a duplex in the 1300 block of Friedensburg Road.

Officials said a woman sustained smoke inhalation and burn injuries while trying to rescue a dog. The dog died from smoke inhalation, officials said. The woman was taken to the hospital. Her condition is unknown.

Lower Alsace Fire Marshal Richard Gerhart said both sides of the duplex were damaged.

He estimates the home where the dog died had between $50,000 to $60,000 in damage, mostly in the kitchen area.

Gerhart estimated damage to the other home to be in the range of $10,000 to $15,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
