Rioting broke out at a national surfing contest in California on Sunday night, but was quelled within a few hours.

The unrest occurred while officers were attempting to disperse crowds following the close of the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, Los Angeles TV station KTLA reported.

A number of people were arrested, and damage was reported to several police cruisers and downtown businesses.

Witness Francisco Gomez told KTLA several portable toilet had also been pushed over in the melee.

Officers used pepper spray to control the mob, according to police.

Video obtained by KTLA showed people pushing over portable toilets and fighting in downtown Huntington Beach.
