HARRISBURG, Pa. -

A Lehigh Valley school district is getting a boost from the state to make its schools safer.

Local legislators announced Wednesday that Northampton Area School District will receive a $25,000 grant through the Department of Education's Safe Schools Targeted Grant program.

The money will go toward violence prevention programs and emergency preparedness initiatives in schools.

"These grants offer funding to allow school districts to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of students, teachers, administrators and anyone else who works in our schools," said Sen. Pat Browne. "Having the training and being prepared is critical in managing and defusing any school violence incidents.”

The grant awarded to the Northampton Area School District is part of more than $2.6 million awarded across the state.
