Noel Diaz-Busquets faces charges after authorities learn what was lost in translation
A Bethlehem man is now facing criminal charges for assaulting his girlfriend's 78-year-old mother in her kitchen two weeks ago, officials said.
Noel Diaz-Busquets had been given a citation for harassment for the attack on the woman in the home they share in the 500 block of Dakotah Street around 12:15 p.m. Aug. 30, officials said.
But Diaz-Busquets' citation turned into criminal charges after Barbara Kleintop, a caseworker from the Northampton County Older Adult Protective Services, brought the woman, who speaks broken English, to police headquarters eight days later, officials said.
With Kleintop serving as a translator, the woman was able to give a fuller account of the incident, officials said.
The woman told police Diaz-Busquets grabbed her by the neck with both hands and shook after throwing her to the floor of her kitchen and pinned her there by putting his knee into her left thigh.
The woman said she had been washing dishes and Diaz-Busquets acted without provocation, officials noted.
Diaz-Busquets didn't stop choking her until her daughter yelled at him, "Are you crazy?" and pulled him off her, officials said.
The woman then went to a neighbor's home to call police, officials said.
Kleintop provided police with photos she took of bruises on the woman's arms, thighs, legs and buttocks, officials said.
Diaz-Busquets, 51, was arraigned Wednesday on charges of harassment, reckless endangerment and assault and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $10,000 bail, according to court documents.
A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 20.
