Nicole Kurowski, Tulpehocken teacher, had sexual relationship with school senior, police say
A high school teacher has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with one of her students.
Nicole Kurowski surrendered to authorities Wednesday on charges that include intercourse/sexual contact with a student, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of children.
Kurowski, 27, worked as a physical education teacher and cheerleading coach at Tulpehocken Area High School in Berks County when she engaged in a physical and sexual relationship with a 17-year-old male student during the 2012-2013 school year, said state police, who launched an investigation upon receiving a tip in September.
"I think whenever you are in education and you are trying to work with kids and you see something like this happen, it is disheartening," said Edward Albert, the Tulpenhocken Area School District superintendent.
During their investigation, detectives said they recovered thousands of text messages and dozens of pictures, revealing that both Kurowski and the student engaged in daily conversations with each other both during and after school hours. Those exchanges, police said, included repeated "I love you" messages.
A few times, Kurowski and the student engaged in indecent contact during school hours, said police, who added that other encounters occurred at inconspicuous areas around Berks County.
Immediately following the tip on Labor Day, the district suspended Kurowski with pay.
"We are here as schools to educate kids. Period," said Albert.
After police finished their investigation and Kurowski surrendered, however, the school decided to continue her suspension without pay.
"We suspended her with pay because we believe the investigation had to play itself out. So, that is what we did," Albert said. "Now that the investigation has played itself out, we are able to suspend without pay."
Kurowski was released Wednesday on $25,000 unsecured bail.
Kurowski also served as an assistant manager at the Antietam Pool in Pennside.
