NEWARK, N.J. -

United Airlines has expanded its already large presence at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey with the opening of a wide-body aircraft maintenance hangar.

The $35 million, 90,000-square-foot facility expands United's maintenance capability for wide-body aircraft, including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, by 33 percent at the airport, officials said.

"The facility will be an asset to our operation, helping us improve the reliability of our aircraft, maintain the highest levels of safety, and provide a superior workplace for our employees," said Ken Burtt, United's senior vice president of technical operations.

United employs more than 13,000 people in the New York metropolitan area, 700 of whom are dedicated to technical operations and maintenance at Newark Liberty, officials said.

"United Airlines' investment of nearly $35 million in its new 21st century hangar at Newark Liberty International Airport is further evidence of the carrier's longstanding commitment to New Jersey," said Deb Gramiccioni, executive director, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

United opened a new global services reception lobby for its top frequent flyers at Newark in January.

The airline offers nearly 400 flights each day from Newark to destinations in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
