A poll shows Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is getting strong support from women and independent voters in his bid for re-election.

Thursday's Quinnipiac University survey showed Christie maintaining a strong double-digit lead over Democrat Barbara Buono among likely women voters.

"Is sisterhood kaput in this election? Sen. Barbara Buono has been out front on women's issues long before she was a candidate, but Gov. Christopher Christie has a huge 23-point lead among women voters, part of his 2-1 dominance overall," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

The poll also showed Christie leads Buono 71 to 22 percent among independent voters. Democrats support Buono 67 to 28 percent.

The two candidates faced off in their first debate Tuesday night, so it remains to be seen what impact their performance may have on voter opinions and their knowledge of Buono.

"Maybe their debate will boost her recognition, but one third of New Jersey voters still don't know enough about Sen. Buono to make an up-or-down decision," Carroll said.

The telephone survey of 1,144 likely voters in New Jersey has a sampling error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
