TRENTON, N.J. -

A new poll shows New Jersey Governor Chris Christie maintaining a dominant double-digit lead over his Democratic challenger.

The Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday shows Christie favored by 58 percent of respondents, while 30 percent back state Sen. Barbara Buono. Eight percent are undecided.

Buono has barely moved the needle against the powerful Republican in six months of polling.

The new survey finds Christie with commanding leads among Shore residents, independent voters and women. Buono leads among black voters, with Hispanic and urban voters divided about evenly.

Thirty percent of Democrats back Christie, while just 4 percent of Republicans align with Buono.

"The question is if Gov. Christie has coattails and, unless he goes all-out for legislative Republicans, the answer now is no," Carroll said. "Buono looks like she's no help to Democrats," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

The telephone survey of 2.042 New Jersey voters was conducted from Aug. 1-5. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.
