New Jersey Rep. Rush Holt wants to bring science into politics

Rush Holt - New Jersey Congressman

A major theme of U.S. Rep. Rush Holt's campaign for the U.S. Senate is something politicians don't usually talk much about: Bringing scientific thinking into political decision making.

A rocket scientist by training, Holt has been trying to reach voters not only by traditional diner visits but also through wonky online videos.

The New Jersey Democrat was joined Tuesday night by a panel of scientists and other experts for an in-person and online campaign event his staff called "Geek out."

The 200 people at the event in person cheered when he suggested the Senate needs a scientist.

Holt said 65 the nation’s leading scientists, including seven Nobel laureates and a former Secretary of Energy, have endorsed his campaign for the Senate.

Polls show Holt lagging far behind Newark Mayor Cory Booker in the four-way Democratic primary on Aug. 13. The winner of an Oct. 16 special election will serve the remainder of the late Frank Lautenberg's term.
