Mom says son isn't playground shooter

READING, Pa. -

The mother of a teen arrested for allegedly shooting someone in a Reading playground last month is speaking out to 69 News.

Andrea Brown, of Reading, says her 16-year-old son, Anthony Russell, is innocent.

Police, however, say Russell shot someone in the leg at the Second and Oley playground on Tuesday, Oct. 22. According to an affidavit obtained by 69 News, Russell was positively identified as the shooter by both a witness and the victim. He was arrested on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Still, in an interview Friday, Brown and her husband said they think police have the wrong person. They said Russell is a "normal teenage boy" with dreams of entering the military. While she admitted he has had "anger issues" in the past, she doesn't believe he would ever shoot someone.

"I just want the charges dropped against my son. Somebody has to be held accountable for having the wrong person," said Brown.

Brown also says she is certain Russell was at a local club's basketball game around 8, when the shooting was reported. She says others have confirmed that information to her.

"To get a gun… he's not that type of person," she told 69 news.

Russell is currently facing adult charges including aggravated assault and attempted first degree murder.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8.
