Cory Booker sworn in as senator

WASHINGTON -

History was made in Washington Thursday, as Cory Booker was sworn into office.

Booker became the first African-American to represent New Jersey in the U.S. Senate.

The 44-year-old former Newark mayor was sworn in by Vice President Joe Biden.

Earlier this month, Booker won a special election over Tea Party Republican Steve Lonegan.

He's finishing out the Senate term of the late Frank Lautenberg, who passed away in June.

Booker submitted his resignation as mayor on Wednesday. It was effective at midnight.

He served as Newark mayor for seven years.
