TRENTON, N.J. -

Gov. Chris Christie has signed legislation aimed at overhauling New Jersey's bail system.

Christie joined local officials on the steps of Trenton City Hall on Monday afternoon to sign a bill that will allow judges to release non-violent suspects as they await trial, even if they can't afford to pay bail.

Voters will also get to decide in November on a companion constitutional amendment that seeks to keep dangerous criminals behind bars by eliminating the right to bail.

The legislature passed the measures by wide margins this month after Christie called them back from summer break for a rare special session.

Christie also signed a bill that would limit employers from asking job candidates whether they have criminal records up front.
