Looks like the voters of Alpha will help decide the future of the borough's swimming pool.
On Tuesday night, borough council voted 3-2 to put this question on the November ballot as a non-binding referendum:
"Do you approve using Open Space Tax Funds that are currently being collected, for the repair and reopening of the John Dolak Memorial Pool?"
The question is being forwarded to the Warren County Clerk's office to be included on the November ballot.
Alpha Mayor Edward Hanics said the once-popular pool has been closed since around 2005. He estimated reopening it could cost as much as $300,000.
If it is reopened, said the mayor, corporate sponsors may be sought.
The mayor said the pool was not closed because of any major leaks, but said some of its equipment -- including pumps and lifeguard stations -- has been sold.
Hanics said the pool was so popular in the 1980s and 1990s that it was hard to find a spot to put down a towel. He said Alpha has more than 2,500 residents.
