Berks County residents have opened their hearts and their wallets for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

TRENTON, N.J. -

If you or your group wants to collect items for New Jersey's victims of Hurricane Sandy, now there's an easy way to disseminate your donations.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has activated a telephone hotline for corporations, organizations and individuals to donate goods and items to help those affected by the superstorm.

People may call 1-855-NJDONATE (1-855-653-6628) or send an email to donate@gov.state.nj.us to donate tangible itetms.

“There has been a tremendous outpouring of support from both New Jerseyans and people across America who are generously giving what they can to help families recover from this catastrophic storm,” said Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno.

“Countless New Jerseyans have seen their homes and communities destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. This hotline will aid in the distribution of donated goods and items that will help victims of Hurricane Sandy begin to move forward. Corporations and organizations continue to give at unprecedented levels, and donations from individuals are particularly meaningful, not only because they help families recover, but because the thoughtfulness of the donation lifts the spirits and morale of everyone affected by Hurricane Sandy.”

Corporations, organizations, and individuals are strongly encouraged to call the hotline before organizing a shipment or initiating a collection drive in their community so the items being collected match the needs of Hurricane Sandy’s victims.

This additional NJ effort to collect and distribute goods and items for Hurricane Sandy victims is intended to augment and support efforts already underway locally and statewide.

This new hotline is separate from the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund,  which collects financial donations to aid in Hurricane Sandy relief.
