Hackettstown High School was placed on a modified lock-down Tuesday morning after a bear was seen in the area, according to town police.

Hackettstown police at 7:40 a.m. responded to the 500 block of Warren Street in reference to a bear sighting. The bear, seen by officers on Center Street, was not acting in an aggressive manner, police said.

The bear was subsequently followed onto the New Jersey State Fish Hatchery Property. The bear was then spotted on Arthur Terrace, Shelley Drive and then in the Minebrook Golf Course on Schooley’s Mountain Road.

Hackettstown High School, Hatchery Hill School and the Hackettstown Middle School were alerted of the bear in the area, resulting in the high school going into a modified lock-down.

The modified lock-down was lifted around 11 a.m. There were no injuries. The state Division of Fish & Wildlife was made aware of the bear sighting, police said.
