Incumbent Sheriff David P. Gallant has apparently survived a primary challenge to win the Republican nomination for Warren County sheriff.
Gallant won his race against Washington Township police chief James J. McDonald Sr. by a margin of 18 votes, according to the Warren County website.
The final vote listed on the site was 3,578 to 3,560.
As of midnight, with 88 of 89 precincts reporting, McDonald was reported ahead by four votes, 3,536 to 3,532.
McDonald also lost to Gallant in a primary three years ago, and Gallant went on to win his first term.
As the winner of Tuesday's primary race, Gallant is assured a second term as sheriff, because the Democrats did not field a candidate.
