U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, dead at 89

President Obama calls him a man who lived America’s promise as a citizen and fought to keep that promise alive as a senator.

New Jersey Democrat Frank Lautenberg has passed away.  He was the last World War II veteran remaining in the Senate.

"Today is a sad day for the people of New Jersey.  Whenever we lose somebody who is committed to public service and has been an honest and dedicated public as Senator Lautenberg was it's a loss for everyone," said Gov. Chris Christie.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie took a moment to remember Senator Frank Lautenberg. who passed away from complications related to viral pneumonia Monday morning.

Lautenberg served for nearly three decades in Washington.

"He did his best for the people of this state," said Warren County residen Judy Garrison.

His best included advancing legislation banning smoking on airplanes and most recently the violence against women act.

"It was a really significant piece of legislation that helps support services that work with domestic violence and he also actually supported the ban on firearms for those who have been convicted of domestic violence," said Christina Hollmann with the Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault Crisis Center in Washington Township, Warren County.

Workers at the center say Lautenberg's efforts have saved lives.

At the Huntington Volunteer Fire Department in Pohatcong Township firefighters have new equipment because of a grant  Lautenberg supported.

"He was really pro-firefighter," said Chief Pete Pursell.

His fellow lawmakers are expressing their condolences, calling Lautenberg "A tireless advocate for the people" ..."A selfless public servant"... and saying it's been "an honor to serve alongside" him.

Governor Christie will name a temporary replacement for Lautenberg's vacant senate seat until an election is held.
