EXETER TWP., Pa. -

Exeter Township is moving closer to the opening of a new grocery store.

Construction of an ALDI is well underway at Perkiomen Avenue and DeMoss Road, across from the Exeter Commons shopping center.

The site was the longtime home of a Sunoco gas station, but that building was torn down to make way for the discount grocery store chain's newest location in Berks County.

The store is set to be completed in time for opening in December, according to township officials.

ALDI operates nearly 1,300 stores in 32 states across the country, including two others in Berks. One is in nearby Saint Lawrence; the other is in Cumru Township.

According to its website, ALDI sells more than 1,300 of the most frequently purchased grocery and household items, primarily under its exclusive brands.
