Muhlenberg Commissioners are community library’s greatest supporters

MUHLENBERG TWP., Pa. -

Representatives from the Muhlenberg Community Library presented the Muhlenberg Township Board of Commissioners with a plaque in honor of the funding the board has consistently provided to the institution.

Linda Roebuck, president of the library board of trustees, and Marcina Wagner, the library's director, presented the certificate.

“I want to thank the Muhlenberg Commissioners for your continued support over the years. The commissioners and Mr. Landes have been our greatest support,” Roebuck said.

“The trend right now for libraries is to become more of a community center, not just to lend out books,” Roebuck explained.

With the commissioners’ support, the library has been able to expand its services in order to embrace that trend.

In recent years, the library has partnered with Miller Keystone Blood Bank, the Greater Berks Food Bank, Reading Area Community College and the Berks County Literacy Council, among other organizations, to provide extended services and speakers for community members.

The library is now visited by more than 100,000 people every year.

Roebuck and Wagner thanked the board, stating that the library could not have expanded in this way without the board’s donations.

In other business, the commissioners are working to develop a new snow removal plan to be implemented next winter, in response to numerous complaints received this year.

In an effort to alleviate residents’ complaints, Engineering Director, Jamal Abodalo, announced that the county will be sending its snow plow drivers to PennDOT training programs in the fall in preparation for the bad weather.

Commissioner Steve Landes explained, “This spring, there is going to be a committee that is involved with the snow plowing operations and which will consider every aspect of snow removal,” including zoning and the procedure for calling snow emergencies.

The special committee will be communicating with all residents impacted by procedure changes.
