Vasquez pleads guilty

COOLBAUGH TWP., Pa. -

A man charged with killing two men in a park in Monroe County has admitted to the crime.

Luis Vasquez, of Pocono Summit, pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of third-degree murder.

Police said he shot and killed two Stroud Township men at the Coolbaugh Township Park in 2012. The victims were identified as Bertoldo Velez, 55, and Joseph King, 38.

Investigators said Vasquez owed one of the victims a large sum of money.

According to his attorney, in return for the plea, first degree murder charges against Vasquez were withdrawn, as was the death penalty.

Vasquez now faces a maximum of 20 to 40 years in prison on each count.

No sentencing date has been set.
