Matthew Dowsett of Schwenksville captured in creek
Pennsylvania State Police captured a wanted criminal who was hiding in Perkiomen Creek in Schwenksville Thursday.
Twenty-two-year-old Matthew Dowsett of Schwenksville fought with a state trooper and attempted to gain control of his firearm, then tried to escape by jumping into the creek.
Police surrounded the area and captured Dowsett hiding along the bank of the creek.
State police from the Skippack Barracks actively had been searching for Dowsett, who was wanted and "a person of interest" in several area crimes.
On Thursday, a state police trooper spotted Dowsett in a vehicle behind homes in the 500 block of Main Street in the Montgomery County borough.
Dowsett got out of the vehicle and attempted to run away,
The trooper caught Dowsett and they struggled for several minutes. Police report the suspect "ultimately assaulted the trooper" and tried to get his gun. The trooper was not injured.
The suspect then tried to escape by entering the creek. Multiple police units arrived in the area and a perimeter was set up.
After Dowsett was taken into custody, he was treated for exposure because of the "extreme cold" of water in the creek.
Dowsett admitted his involvement in the incident, according to police.
He was charged with aggravated assault, disarming a law enforcement officer, terroristic threats, simple assault and resisting arrest.
He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Albert Augustine and committed to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility. Bail was set at $100,000 cash.
