Man who talked with hit-and-run victim right before his death offers new clue
A new clue is raising new questions about a deadly hit-and-run. State Police say someone hit 60-year-old Paul Agens along Route 22 and left him to die last weekend. Now, a gas station clerk is offering a new clue that raises a new set of questions.
Daniel Walter says was one of the last people to see Agens alive.
"It was really tragic, because he was just there earlier and he made me laugh a few times," said Walter.
State Police are still looking for the hit-and-run driver. Just moments before the crash, Walter sold the victim a can of gas at a Sunoco station in Wilson borough.
"He was just asking how much gas that I thought it would take for him to get back over to his car and make it home and everything," said Walter.
Earlier this week, Agens' great-niece pleaded for information.
"If you are scared, it is okay, accidents happen, just come forward talk to the police, family, talk to whoever, somebody," said Jennifer Monka.
Now, a new clue. Walter said Agens left the gas station with someone.
"A red SUV had showed up as soon as he was done pumping the gas and he put his window down for a moment," he said. "They talked for a couple of seconds and he got in the car and took off."
It's not clear if State Police have spoken with the SUV driver, or if he even witnessed the accident. Investigators are reviewing security camera footage from the gas station and a Burger King next door.
Walter just hopes someone will come forward.
"Just be honest. If it was an accident, it was an accident," he said. "The sooner that everybody finds out, then the sooner that people can move on and his family can get some closure."
