The victim of a laundromat shooting, a 53-year-old man, was literally fighting for his life against an 18-year-old robber, police said. Fortunately, the victim won the battle.
It was an attempted robbery-turned-shooting at the Wash Around the Clock laundromat in Kenhorst.
Police arrested Pablo Martinez Jr. in connection with the shooting.
Martinez, wearing a mask and carrying an illegal gun, approached a customer doing his laundry and demanded the victim's wallet and cell phone, said police.
After the victim complied, police said it was not enough.
"When the suspect appeared angry that he did not get enough money from the wallet, he got closer to the victim and was pointing the gun even closer to the victim. At that, the victim responded by trying to knock the gun away with a wash basket," said Sgt. John Solecki, Reading Police Dept.
Martinez and the victim then got into a fight. Despite being shot in the head, the victim fought back for about 10 minutes. Martinez then fled and the victim drove himself to the hospital.
"Fortunately, the wound did not cause a life-threatening or serious injury to the victim because of the angle. Fortunately, he was able to fight back and win that fight," said Solecki.
Solecki said he cannot remember any problems at the laundromat in the past, and it shocked community members, as well.
"It is just really surreal," said area employee Ryan Venkler.
Police later arrested Martinez after he drove himself to St. Joseph Medical Center, claiming he was assaulted in a park. Martinez was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and robbery.
