Former Lopatcong, NJ fire Chief Barry Stires dies in 60-foot fall from cliff

BETHLEHEM TWP., Pa. -

The former Lopatcong, N.J., fire chief, helping family in the area clear brush, fell off a cliff and died in Northampton County on Sunday afternoon.

Barry Stires, was tossing tree branches over a steep, wooded cliff area off Rim Road in Bethlehem Twp., Northampton Co., around 1:30 p.m. when the accident happened, officials said.

Stires, 56, of Phillipsburg, N.J., slipped and tumbled over the edge, falling about 60 feet.

Stires was rushed to the hospital, but he died about an hour after the fall from severe head injuries, according to the Lehigh County coroner.
