Man dies after car hits gas station sign at high speed

CHESTNUTHILL TWP., Pa. -

A New Jersey man died late Monday night when his car hit the base of a gas station sign in Monroe County, officials said.

The crash happened around 11:50 p.m. on Route 209 North, just north of Frable Road in Chestnuthill Township.

Michael Melascaglia was speeding and lost control of his vehicle, police said. The car began to spin counterclockwise across the road before crashing into a large steel base supporting a gas station sign.

Melascaglia, 36, died at the scene. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt.
