A New Jersey man is facing charges for stealing from vehicles on two separate occasions, one of them involving a bird bath used to break into an SUV, officials said.
Stephon W. McDonald-Covington was taken into custody after he was seen using a bird bath to smash the driver's door window of a blue Ford Explorer parked in a rear lot at 425 East 5th St., Bethlehem, around 10:40 p.m. Monday, officials said.
The witness who saw McDonald-Covington break into the SUV was the roommate of the SUV's usual operator, John Elson, officials noted.
Elson told police a $50 Tom-Tom was missing from the SUV owned by his father, following the break-in, officials said.
About $550 in damage was done to the car, officials noted.
When McDonald-Covington was searched, he was found with several items stolen from a purse belonging to Ruby Darden-Bailey that was taken from her car on Sunday in the 400 block of Pierce Street in Bethlehem, officials said.
Darden-Bailey's driver's license, check book and four of her credit cards were among the stolen items, valued at $40, officials said.
For Monday's incident, McDonald-Covington, 23, of 615 East Front St., North Plainfield, N.J., was arraigned on charges of theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $3,000 bail, according to court documents.
For Sunday's incident, McDonald-Covington was arraigned on a charge of receiving stolen property, with bail being set at $3,000, court papers show.
A preliminary hearing on both sets of charges is set for 9 a.m. Nov. 22.
