Male-female duo charged in spate of stolen RV batteries over last month, police say
A man and a woman who live together in Bethlehem are facing charges in the theft of 15 batteries from recreational vehicles in northern Northampton County over the last month, officials said.
Carl E. Klinger and Felicia M. Davies were arrested after stealing a battery from an RV owned by Ronald Oren that was parked at Oren's home at 303 Kromer Road, Bushkill Township, around 9:20 a.m. Friday, officials said.
Klinger and Davies were taken into custody in Nazareth, following a brief foot chase after police stopped the black 1996 Mazda 626 Klinger was driving, officials said.
Klinger was uncooperative when questioned by police, but Davies told them she and Klinger had stolen more than 100 batteries from RVs in the last month or so, officials said.
Davies said Klinger would drive and she would steal the batteries, which were stored in a box and fastened only with a strap she could cut with a knife, officials noted.
Davies agreed to be driven around Bushkill and Moore townships and pointed out 15 locations in Bushkill where she and Klinger stole batteries worth a total of $1,875, officials said.
Each battery was valued at $125, but Davies said she and Klinger sold them to scrap yards in Whitehall Township, Lehigh Co., and Wind Gap, Northampton Co., for $12 each, officials said, adding that Davies pointed out $12 is "the cost of a bag of heroin."
Police searched Klinger's car and found a black and silver box with heroin; burned silver spoons; used and unused hypodermic syringes, and empty glassine packets, officials said.
A blue handle utility knife; a red handle wire cutter; a pair of gloves; red-and-black bolt cutters; five deep cycle batteries, and numerous red and black lead battery wires were also found, officials said.
Klinger, 37, was arraigned on charges of criminal conspiracy, theft, possessing instruments of crime, receiving stolen property, making terroristic threats, drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $10,000 bail, according to court documents.
Davies, 24, was arraigned on charges of criminal conspiracy, theft and receiving stolen property, and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $7,500 bail, court papers show.
A preliminary hearing for Klinger and Davies is set for 9 a.m. Oct. 1.
