Police in Carbon County say an elderly woman was the target of a phone scam involving a phony sweepstakes.

Mahoning Township provided the following account of the May 17 incident:

Police were dispatched to Walmart for a reported fraud. Walmart employees advised police that a 92-year-old female from Lehighton had come into the store requesting a money pac card for $100.

Suspecting she was the victim of a scam, Walmart employees contacted police.

The investigation showed the female had received a phone call at her residence advising her she had won a sweepstakes. The caller told her she had to pay a fee to collect the winnings. This prompted her to go to Walmart for the money card.

Police determined the call was part of a scam that originated in Jamaica.
