Lower Macungie concerned about traffic flow from proposed warehouses

LOWER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. -

Planners in Lower Macungie Township were eager to hear a presentation Tuesday night by Bethlehem-based developer Liberty Property Trust on how traffic flows from a proposed warehouse facility in neighboring Upper Macungie Township would affect local roads.

However, that presentation did not take place as developers requested and received a postponement late Tuesday afternoon.

The Lower Macungie Planning Commission had no items on the agenda to discuss Tuesday night as all three scheduled items were postponed.

Liberty Property Trust is in the midst of planning the construction of two 1-million square foot plus warehouse sites on Mill Creek Road in Upper Macungie Township, adjacent to the Route 222 bypass.

Only 10 acres of the massive project lie in Lower Macungie Township, in a commercially-zoned district.

Lower Macungie Township engineer, William Erdman, said Liberty Property Trust asked for the postponement after their senior designers decided they needed more time to address specific issues surrounding the project.

A recent letter to Lower Macungie Planners from Keystone Engineering Consultants, who are the engineers for Upper Macungie Township, states developers are proposing 1.288 million square-foot warehouse and 1.198 million square-foot warehouses at the Liberty at Mill Creek site.

Additional development plans include a 336,000 square-foot manufacturing building, an 84,000 square-foot general office building, four restaurants, a drive-through bank and an auto lube shop.

Traffic improvements, including widening and addition of lanes at the intersection of Hamilton Boulevard and Mill Creek Road are also being studied, Erdman said.

"The project is in a holding pattern waiting for PennDOT approval," Erdman said. "Our primary focus is the southern stretch of Mill Creek Road and the intersection at Hamilton Boulevard. That traffic already backs up at rush hour past where the site of the warehouse driveway will be."

Liberty Property Trust is scheduled to appear in front of the Upper Macungie Planning Commission on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. to re-submit land development plans, traffic improvement plans and a traffic study for the proposed Liberty at Mill Creek project.
